Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy, often simply referred to as a root canal, is the process of removing infected tissue in order to save the tooth's natural structure. Dr. Le offers precise, gentle root canal therapy at our state-of-the-art facilities in Dallas, Amarillo, and Fort Worth, TX. We also offer intravenous (IV) sedation upon request so patients can remain relaxed throughout the procedure. With root canal therapy, patients can restore health to a tooth and avoid the need for extraction.

When is Root Canal Therapy Needed?

There are a number of circumstances in which your doctor may recommend root canal therapy:

  • Deep, severe decay
  • Oversized dental fillings
  • Dental trauma
  • Chipped tooth
  • Repetitive dental work

Not only does an infection in this area typically cause sensitivity and discomfort, but the infection can spread to other areas of the mouth or body and further harm your health. It is important to note that some patients experience no symptoms, which is why it is so important to undergo twice-yearly exams.

What Does the Treatment Entail?

Despite what you may have heard, root canal therapy involves minimal pain and most patients compare the process to receiving a dental filling. We use local anesthetic and sedation when necessary to make the process as comfortable as possible for our patients. You can generally expect root canal therapy to take two to three appointments to complete. The number of appointments needed depends on the severity of the infection.

Removing Infection

During the first phase of treatment, we will remove any areas of decay and take out the infected pulp. We can then use a disinfectant solution to flush out the root canals.

With root canal therapy, patients can preserve an unhealthy tooth and avoid the need for extraction.

Filling the Tooth

Once we have eradicated the infection from the tooth, we will fill the tooth with a rubber-like material. This protects the root canals and pulp chamber from reinfection in the future. At this point, we can place a temporary restoration on the tooth.

Placing Your Crown

Generally, after about two weeks, you will return to our office for the placement of a permanent dental filling or dental crown. We utilize tooth-colored fillings to maintain the aesthetics of your smile, and our all-porcelain crowns are custom-made to ensure a precise, comfortable fit.

Treatment Benefits

Root canal therapy can alleviate any discomfort and other unpleasant symptoms caused by the infection. It will also prevent the infection from spreading to other areas of the body and causing additional complications. The purpose of root canal therapy is to eliminate the infection and save the natural structure of the tooth. In doing so, we can better preserve your oral health.
