Implant-Supported Dentures Boast Maximal Stability

Illustration of implant-supported dentureImplant-supported dentures are durable dental prostheses used to restore the function and appearance of your smile after the loss of multiple teeth. Dr. Clark Damon, practicing in Dallas, Amarillo, and Fort Worth, TX, is highly trained in his field and is able to combine dentures with dental implants to create stable, beautiful restorations. He also uses a high-tech iCAT Cone Beam 3-D scanner for the most precise and accurate treatment planning. This type of restoration has numerous benefits over traditional dentures.

Traditional Restorations vs. Implant-Supported Dentures

Traditional, removable dentures have allowed countless patients to speak and eat again after having lost some or all their teeth. Despite this achievement, they do have drawbacks. Traditional dentures are removable, and only held in place with either natural suction or a dental adhesive. As a result, many patients are frustrated when their dentures become loose as they are trying to eat or speak.

Rather than relying on suction or adhesives, implant-supported dentures are securely attached to four to eight dental implants.

Additionally, dentures do nothing to halt the bone deterioration that occurs after tooth loss. The jawbone continues to resorb and change shape, so eventually, the dentures will not fit correctly. When this happens, new dentures must be made to accommodate these physical changes.

Implant-supported dentures are similar in size and shape to traditional dentures. They are available in partial or full restorations, and it is possible to remove them (although most patients opt for fixed dentures). Rather than relying on suction or adhesives, implant-supported dentures are affixed directly to four to eight dental implants. This secures the denture in place, allowing patients to eat and speak with confidence.

Weighing Your Treatment Options

In order to help you choose which restorative option is right for you, Dr. Damon will discuss various advantages of each type of denture with you. Generally, patients who choose implant-supported dentures can enjoy:

Improved Bone Health

Implants replace the missing tooth roots and in doing so, continue to stimulate the jawbone, preventing the bone loss that occurs after tooth loss. This maintains the jaw and bone structures, avoiding the need for denture modifications.

Greater Convenience

Most patients choose permanent, or non-removable, implant-supported dentures. This means they can brush and floss as they would their natural teeth. Unlike traditional restorations, they do not have to remove the prosthesis to clean and soak. This permanence also allows for enhanced functionality, as the dentures will never slip out of place. This also means that patients can enjoy all their favorite foods again.

Enhanced Appearance

Because the implants preserve the jawbone, the facial structures have adequate support. This prevents the collapse of the lips and cheeks that can make patients appear much older. Having a full set of beautiful and functional teeth can also take years off of one’s appearance. For many patients, this gives them a big boost in confidence and overall quality of life.
