Dental Crowns Restoring Your Durable Natural-Looking Smile

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped restorations used to encase and strengthen a damaged tooth. Drs. Clark Damon and Kari Blankenship offer biocompatible ceramic and zirconia dental crowns at our Dallas, Amarillo, and Fort Worth, TX, offices to provide a seamless aesthetic restoration. At Texas Dental Center, our goal is to restore the health of your smile while enhancing or maintaining its beauty.

What Does a Dental Crown Do?

A dental crown can repair a tooth that has suffered extensive damage due to untreated decay or dental trauma. Generally, dental crowns are used when dental fillings and other restorations are insufficient. Each crown we provide to our patients is completely customized to complement your smile. Thanks to advanced technology, today’s dental crowns are near-exact replicas of the damaged tooth to ensure full functionality and a completely natural appearance. In fact, many patients choose dental crowns to conceal cosmetic concerns.

Generally, dental crowns are used when dental fillings and other restorations are insufficient. Crowns are designed to simply fit over the reshaped damaged tooth. It serves to seal off the tooth, protecting it from cavity-causing bacteria and other damage. Crowns can also restore missing teeth by topping dental implants, which are small posts embedded in the jawbone. In this way, dental crowns restore the ability to chew and speak properly while alleviating any discomfort.

Crown Materials

Dental crowns can come in a wide range of materials, including metals, a combination of porcelain and metal, and all-ceramic or all-zirconia. At Texas Dental Center, Drs. Damon and Blankenship provide patients with all-ceramic or all-zirconia crowns. Both of these options can be customized to not only fit precisely and maintain a healthy bite, but also seamlessly match the shade of your surrounding teeth. This ensures the strongest and most aesthetically pleasing smile possible. Neither option causes an issue for patients with allergies to metal, and both look completely natural.

We also offer traditional crowns such as Gold or Porcelain Fused to Metal.

The Fabrication Process

Receiving a dental crown requires two appointments to complete. During the first appointment, your doctor will carefully remove the decayed or otherwise damaged portions of your tooth. Then, they will shave down the tooth to make room for the crown. Once this reshaping process is complete, the doctor will take impressions of the tooth. These impressions are sent to a specialized lab where skilled technicians will craft your custom-made crown. To protect your tooth in the meantime, we will place a temporary restoration.

Designing and fabricating a crown typically takes about two weeks to complete. Once we have the finished product, you will return to our office for the placement of the restoration. First, Dr. Damon or Dr. Blankenship will remove the temporary crown and any excess cement. Then, the doctor will put the new crown in place, checking to ensure a secure and comfortable fit. If we are satisfied with the crown’s fit, the dentist will then apply dental cement to the inside of the crown before bonding it in place.
